Piatigorsky, Gregor

(1903-76)
   Ukrainian cellist. Born in Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine, he received his first music lessons from his father. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and in 1919 became a member of the Lenin Quartet and principal cellist of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra. In 1921 he went to Warsaw, Leipzig and later Berlin. He subsequently became first cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic, but left to become a soloist and performed in major capitals throughout the world.
